bit error rate

(BER)
The number of erroneous bits divided by the total number of bits over a stipulated period of time. The BER is usually expressed as a number and a power of 10 (e.g., 2.5 erroneous bits out of 100,000 bits transmitted would be 2.5 in 10 or 2.5 x 10).
